Patriot William Wilkerson: Revolutionary Soldier Marker Dedication

A grave marker for Patriot William Wilkerson (also spelled Wilkinson), a soldier in the American Revolution, will be dedicated by the Brown County Veterans Coalition, in conjunction with other patriotic organizations and Wilkerson descendants. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Fleetwood Cemetery on Crooked Creek Road in Brown County.

All Wilkerson descendants and interested persons are invited to attend. Wilkerson’s descendants settled in Brown, Monroe, Greene, and Bartholomew counties and many still live in these areas.

William Wilkerson, born January 11, 1735 in King George County, VA, was a private with North Carolina troops in the American Revolution, enlisting at Granville, and serving a total of 14 months according to his pension, from 1776 to 1781. Ten years late he began moving west to Monroe County with his large family, where he was living in 1835. He died on his farm on Crooked Creek August 18, 1842 at the age of 107 years.

A colorful presentation of the colors by the Indiana Society Sons of
the American Revolution will begin the program. The new marker will be
dedicated by Brown County Veterans, followed by local historian Jeanette Richart who will review highlights of Wilkerson's life and service. Bloomington Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will present The Flag of the U.S.A. to a William Wilkerson descendant in his memory.

Fleetwood Cemetery was established in 1842. There is a blue Indiana Historical Bureau sign on Crooked Creek Road, just before a steep, rough road on the right. You may park on Crooked Creek Road and the Brown County Veterans will drive you to the cemetery. There will also be room for some cars if you wish to drive in.
